Abstract

Background: The orientation program gives information about the course curriculum, future opportunities, campus details and facilities available for students, various learning methods, coping with stress, and mental health. Objective: The present study was undertaken to observe the students’ knowledge and attitude and to obtain their feedback regarding the orientation program. Materials and Methods: A total of 106 participants responded to the knowledge and attitude questionnaire and a total of 111 participants responded to the feedback questionnaire. Knowledge and attitude were assessed before and after the orientation program. Feedback was assessed after the orientation program. Results: There was an improvement in the knowledge mentioned by the participants after attending the orientation program. The majority of the participants gave positive feedback about the orientation program. Majority of the participants reported that the orientation program improved not only their knowledge about academics but also the management of their mental and emotional health. Conclusion: The present study results present the positive impact of the orientation program on medical students. The study results support the implementation of the orientation program for the benefit of medical students in general.   Keywords: Orientation program, Medical students, Medical education.

Abstract

Background: Yoga was introduced to the MBBS curriculum on 12 June 2022. There is a need to obtain the perceptions of the students about this introduction of yoga training in their curriculum. Objective: The present study was undertaken to observe the effectiveness of 10 days of the Yoga program on reaction time and to obtain the perceptions of first-year MBBS students about the introduction of Yoga training in the MBBS course curriculum. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 first-year MBBS students studying at R.D. Gardi Medical College were part of the study after obtaining the voluntary, written, informed consent. Willing participants who practiced yoga for 10 days as per the protocol of NMC were recruited in the present study. The common protocol for Yoga was prepared by the Morarji Desai Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush. Auditory reaction time for high and low pitch sounds, and visual reaction time for red and green light were recorded using the RT apparatus for research manufactured by Anand Agencies, Pune. Both right-hand and left-hand responses were recorded. A standard questionnaire was used to record the perceptions of the students about the introduction of Yoga training in the MBBS course curriculum. Results: Both auditory and visual reaction times were decreased followed by the yoga program. The majority of the students agreed that yoga offers multiple beneficial effects. The majority of the students agreed that yoga practice has many psychological benefits. The majority of the students agreed that the overall effect of yoga was much beneficial. The majority of the students reported that major barriers were lack of motivation and lack of time for yoga. The majority of students agreed positively that the inclusion of yoga in the curriculum was beneficial to them. Conclusion: The present study results explained that there was a decrease in the reaction time followed by yoga practice. The majority of students invited the move by the apex body incorporating Yoga in the curriculum.   Keywords: Yoga program, MBBS course curriculum.

Abstract

Introduction: Optimal stimulation of vestibular system has more soothing effects and is essential throughout the life. Though there are different methods like running, swinging, dancing, jumping to stimulate vestibular system, swinging on a swing is a simple method to stimulate vestibular system, which was an ancient practice incorporated in Indian tradition. Aim: The aim of this research was to assess the effect of vestibular stimulation on selected biochemical parameters in young adults. Materials and Methods: A total of 300 (130 males and 170 females) young adults were screened. 240 (120 males and 120 females) participants satisfying both inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. This was a longitudinal follow-up study in which, participants were assessed three times. The first assessment was performed during regular classes (with no examination in preceding two weeks and forth coming two weeks), these are pre-intervention values. The second assessment was performed eight months after the intervention (during regular classes), and third assessment was performed sixteen months after the intervention in stressed state (A week before the University examinations). Results: The mean salivary IgA in the experimental female group was 61mg/mL. After 8 months, there was a slight increase in salivary IgA whereas after 16 months also there was a slight increase in salivary IgA. The mean salivary a amylase in experimental female group was 84 U/ mL. After 8 months, there was a slight decrease in salivary a amylase whereas after 16 months also, there was a slight decrease in salivary a-amylase. Conclusion: The present study results support positive impact of stimulation of vestibular system using natural methods like swinging on a swing that exists as day to day activity in the tradition of India. The study recommends using the swing in routine life style for better wellbeing. Keywords: Vestibular system, Bio-chemical parameters, Saliva, Immunity.

Abstract

Introduction: Music is a divine mode for management of several conditions. Extensive literature is available to support the importance of music in health care management. Objective: The present study was undertaken to observe the effectiveness of raga Bhairavi on negative affectivity and social inhibition in elderly women. Materials and Methods: Thirty elderly women between 50-65 years were included in the study after obtaiing the informed consent. Willing participants were recruited in the study and those with any severe complications were excluded from the study. The study used type D (DS-14) questionnaire to assess the negative emotions like negative affectivity and social inhibition. Raga therapy was administered for 15 minutes duration wherein first five minutes they listened to OM and then 10 minutes of listening to Raga Bhairavi. The intervention was given once in a day for five days in a week for six weeks. Results: There was a significant decrease in both negative affectivity and social inhibition followed by the raga therapy. Conclusion: The study results suggest that the raga therapy is effective in the management of negative emotions in elderly women with type D personality. The study recommends implementation of Raga therapy in routine life style for management of negative emotions. Keywords: Raga therapy, Negative affectivity, Social inhibition.

Abstract

Introduction: It is learnt that Parkinson’s disease has no specific standard treatment, without side effects. Hence, it is very essential to discover a natural therapy which promises less or minimum side effects in delaying or preventing Parkinson’s disease (PD). Objective: This study was taken-up to demonstrate the effectiveness of caloric vestibular stimulation on the brain neurochemicals in rotenone induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease. Materials and Methods: T he study included 24 healthy and adult male Swiss albino mice . Their body weight was between 25 - 40g . Mice were randomly divided into four groups, wherein each group was containing 6 rats. Cold water treatment was used in the study as specified in literature as hot water (40o C) causes irritation in the middle ear cavity of the mice. The following neurotransmitters like Acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine and GABA were estimated by using kit method procured from Sigma Chemical Co. Results: The results of the study suggest a positive impact of vestibular stimulation in Parkinson’s disease management. Conclusion: The study results are in accordance to the earlier studies showing a positive impact of vestibular stimulation on the brain neuro -transmitters in rotenone induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, the study demands further research to learn the mechanism of action of vestibular stimulation in the management of Parkinson’s disease. Keywords: Parkinson’s disease, Rotenone, Neurotransmitters.
