Abstract

Aim: The aim was to study the status of the third molar in a Senegalese population using panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: The study covered 183 patients, aged 20 to 45 years, who came to the Department of Dentistry for consultation. After a clinical examination, each patient was given a panoramic x-ray. The variables of the third molar studied were: agenesis, impacted status, angle inclination of the third mandibular molar. Results: Of the 732 third molars explored, 76.6% (n=561) were anatomically well implanted on the dental arch. The prevalence of agenesis of the third molar in the study sample was 6.9% (n=50) and it was higher at the maxillary with 7.1%. On the other hand, the third molars impacted represented 12.8% (n=94) and they were more important at the mandible with 13.7%. Extraction was more frequent in the third mandibular molar. Mesio-angulation was the most common pattern. Conclusion: This study provided an overview of the prevalence of agenesis of the third molar and the value of panoramic radiography in the third molar study. Keywords: Agenesis, Impacted tooth, Panoramic radiography, Third molars.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate radiographic changes of the mandible by mandibular cortical index (MCI) within a Senegalese population. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on digital panoramic radiographs of Senegalese melanoderm subjects. The radiographs were classified into 3 age groups: 18-40 years (Group I), 41-55 years (Group II), 56 years and over (Group III). The MCI was ranked according to Klemetti in three scores (C1, C2 and C3). The score was assigned by observing the morphology of the lower mandibular cortex. The chi-square test was used to study the relationship of MCI with age and sex. The level of significance was set at p ? 0.05. Results: A total of 82 numerical radiographs were selected. In men, 79.07% (n = 34) had normal cortex (C1) and 69% (n = 27) in women. The C2 variant was more common in women (n = 10) and the C3 score was only found in women. The appearance of the lower cortex of the mandible was significantly associated with age (p = 0.009). Conclusion: This study has shown that MCI is a sensitive tool for the diagnosis of bone changes in the mandible in black African populations. However, these assertions should be confirmed by other studies with more representative samples. Keywords: Bone remodeling, Panoramic x-ray, Mandible, Radiography digital, African population.

Abstract

Introduction : The objective of this preliminary study was to evaluate the interest of the third molar in the determination of the age of Senegalese subjects by the Demirjian method. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of digital panoramic x-rays of Senegalese patients, aged 5 to 24 years. The statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS software. The significance threshold was less than 0.05 (p<0.05). Results: Of the patient radiographs explored, 283 met the selection criteria. The sample selected consisted of 52% (n=146) boys and 48% (n=137) girls. Germination of the third mandibular molar began at an average age of 7.21±1.64 years in boys and 7.71 ± 3.71 years in girls. Apical closure occurs at 20.11± 2.89 years and 20.70±2.73 years for boys and girls, respectively. Conclusion: This preliminary study shows the interest of the use of the third molar in the estimation of age in the Senegalese population. A radiographic study of the third molar on the determination of the civil age, with a representative sample of African subjects aged between 14 and 22 years proves necessary. Keywords: Chronologic age, Dental age, Third molar,  Panoramic Radiographic, Demirjian method, Senegaleses.
