Abstract

Pilomatricomas are rare benign skin adnexal tumors usually occurring in the head, neck or upper extremities of children and young adults. Ossifying pilomatricoma is a still rarer entity. Here, a case of a 22-year-old lady is reported, who presented with a firm to hard swelling in the right side of the neck. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed features of ossifying pilomatricoma with the formation of bone marrow elements. The patient was free of recurrence on 6-month follow-up. The case highlights a rare entity with characteristic histopathological features.   Keywords: Pilomatricoma, Ossifying pilomatricoma, Osseous metaplasia

Abstract

Genitourinary tuberculosis is uncommon and mostly involves kidneys, seminal vesicles and epididymis. Isolated prostatic tuberculosis is rarely reported and is an under recognized entity. Here, we report such a case which clinically mimicked prostatic carcinoma and was subsequently diagnosed on image guided needle biopsy.   Keywords Prostate, Tuberculosis, Prostatic carcinoma

Abstract

Endometrial carcinomas are common gynecological malignancies which have traditionally been classified and graded on the basis of clinicopathological and histopathologic findings. However, these classifications are fraught with subjectivity and considerable overlaps. The new molecular basis of classification intends to provide more objective and accurate information even on diagnostic biopsy which can help the treating clinicians to decide upon the appropriate management at a very early stage. In this review, the need and evolution of the molecular classification will be discussed along with subsequent developments, as a step towards personalized medicine. Keywords: Endometrial carcinomas, Molecular classification.

Abstract

Histoplasma capsulatum is an opportunistic fungus that is endemic in some countries and can cause severe widespread disease, particularly among the immunocompromised patients. A meticulous examination of aspiration smears in a proper clinical setting can provide a rapid and accurate diagnosis in lymphadenopathies caused by Histoplasma species. Keywords: Histoplasma capsulatum, lymph node, FNAC.

Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus -2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the zoonotic coronavirus responsible for the present pandemic of COVID-19. The novel ways of transmission of this virus have eluded and infected the global population, surpassing the confines of the place of its origin in Wuhan, China. The healthcare workers are one of the most susceptible populations and laboratory safety protocols are being devised throughout the world to protect the laboratory personnel, who are the frontline fighters in this war against the virus. The present narrative review is an attempt to encompass the published literature sharing the experience and guidelines of biosafety for those working in histopathology and cytopathology laboratories. Keywords: SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, Biosafety, Histopathology, Cytopathology.
