Abstract

Introduction: Cancer is one of the major human diseases and causes large suffering / economic loss worldwide. These days various new strategies are being developed to treat human cancer, but the sure-shot, perfect cure is yet to be brought into the world of medicine. In the search of potential anticancer agents from natural products, the present investigation was carried out to evaluate the in vitro anticancer efficiency of Materials and Methods: The anticancer activity was determined by the cytotoxic potential of test material at 100 ?g/ml via SRB assay. Cells were allowed to grow for 24 h on 96 – well flat bottom tissue culture plates and cells were further allowed to grow in the presence of test material for 48h. Cell growth was terminated by addition of 50% (w/v) tricarboxylic acid and cells were stained with SRB dye. Excess dye was removed by washing with 1% (v/v) acetic acid and bound dye was dissolved in Tris buffer. OD was taken at 540 nm and growth inhibition of 70% or above was considered active. Results: The methanolic extract of fruit showed in vitro anticancer effect in the range of 75%-95% against four human cancer cell lines of colon, melanoma, prostrate and lung origin. Conclusion: The methanolic fruit extract of harad can be explored for lead molecule in the development of anticancer drug to provide a great service to cancer patients. Abstract

Introduction: The present study was carried out to evaluate antifungal activity of methanolic extract from Emblica officinalis leaves against three phytopathogens viz., Alternaria alternate, Bipolaris specifera and Curvuleria lunata. Materials and Methods: Inhibitory potential of methanolic extract was analyzed by poisoned food technique in which different concentrations of test material were prepared in sterilized potato dextrose agar. Results: Results of the present study revealed that Embilica officinalis has potential activity against the three test pathogens with IC value of 0.91±0.01 mg/mL, 1±0.015 mg/mL and 1.1±0.0152 mg/mL against Bipolaris specifera, Alternaria alternata and Curvuleria lunata respectively. Conclusion: Amla has some potential antifungal activity for the prevention and treatment of fungal infections. Keywords: Emblica officinalis, Methanolic extract, Alternaria alternata, Biopolaris specifera, Curvuleria lunata

Abstract

The present study was carried out to evaluate antibacterial potential of methanolic extract from amla leaves via agar-well diffusion method against two gram positive ( subtilis MTCC2389, MTCC7443) and three gram negative (MTCC4821, MTCC2127, MTCC7162) strains. Susceptibility of plant extract was tested by serial microdilution method (MIC) and agar well diffusion method was determined. The extract showed maximum zone of inhibition against (17.6 mm) followed by (16.5 mm) and (16.2 mm). However, activity was also reported against (15.5 mm) and (15 mm). The different concentrations of extract (10?l and 20?l) were used and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 62.5 to 2000 ?g/ml was compared with the standard drug Chloramphenicol (5?g). The MIC of methanolic extract was found 550 ?g/ml against and The results of present study revealed that leaves of amla possesses antibacterial potential and source of new antibiotics. Therefore, medicinal plants are finding their way into pharmaceuticals, neutralceuticals and food Supplements that could be useful in chemotherapy to control infectious diseases.
