Abstract

Aim: To see the variations in Iron and lipid profile which may affect the thyroid functions in hypothyroid and hyperthyroidism patients. Materials and Methods: Ferritin, Iron, TIBC and lipid profile levels were estimated in 50 age and sex matched patients of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism using Thyroid profile and ferritin levels were estimated using CLIA in Mindray. Iron, TIBC and Lipid profile levels were estimated in BS380 and the results were correlated statistically. Results: Serum ferritin levels were found to be significantly decreased in patients with hypothyroidism and increased in hyperthyroidism (p < 0> Conclusion: Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism show the variations in iron and lipid profile. The estimation of iron profile and lipid profile may help in understanding the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and monitoring of hypothyroid and hyperthyroidism patients. Keywords: Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Ferritin.

Abstract

Aim: Is to study the changes of serum ferritin, Iron, TIBC and LDH levels which may affect the thyroid functions in hypothyroid patients. Materials and Methods: Serum Thyroid profile, Ferritin levels were estimated in 50 age and sex matched controls and patients of hypothyroidism, using CLIA in Mindray. Serum Iron, TIBC and LDH levels were estimated in ERBA chem7 and the results were correlated statistically. Results: Serum ferritin levels were found to be significantly decreased in patients with hypothyroidism compared to normal subjects (p < 0> Conclusion: Hypothyroidism is associated with low serum ferritin levels. The estimation of serum ferritin may help in understanding the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and monitoring of hypothyroid patients. Keywords: Ferritin hypothyroidism, LDH -Lactate Dehydrogenase, TIBC -Total iron binding capacity.

Abstract

Background: As there are very few studies in our region about the metabolic changes in hypothyroid and renal failure patients in collection of sample during various phases of time, where these organs were involved in regulating this metabolism. Aim: To evaluate the trends of lipid profiles in hypothyroidism and chronic kidney disease throughout various phases of time. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective control study conducted on 50 CKD patients, 50 hypothyroidism patients and 50 controls in the tertiary care hospital attending to OPD. Collected samples are analyzed for Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol whereas LDL and VLDL are measured by calculated method taken at various phases of time. The data was entered into the master chart and analyzed statistically. Results: It was found that random lipid profile values in CKD and hypothyroidism were higher and are statistically significant compared to fasting and postprandial states. Particularly there is an elevation in Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL cholesterol whereas HDL levels are decreased. Conclusion: This research work is done by analyzing the fasting, postprandial and random states because it includes an explanation of why a random blood sample is preferred to analyze lipid profile values. Thyroid disease and renal failure patients are more prone to development of atherosclerosis which were primary cause for development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications. So collection of the sample also plays key role in management.   Keywords: Dyslipidemia, CKD, Hypothyroidism, Lipid profile.
