Abstract

In the ever-evolving field of esthetic dentistry, veneers are the most conservative and hence preferred treatment of choice due to their promising results. Veneers are mainly fabricated from conventional low fusing feldspathic porcelain. The conventional technique used for fabrication of porcelain veneers are the platinum foil technique and the refractory die technique. However, these are time consuming and technique sensitive. Technological advancements in this field have proven that CAD/CAM restorations can be fabricated in a single visit. Studies have shown them to have improved marginal fit and internal adaptation. This case report focuses on esthetic rehabilitation of patients having dental fluorosis, using CAD-CAM fabricated veneers.   Keywords: Ceramic veneers, CADCAM, Dental Fluorosis

Abstract

Treatment of edentulous maxillary anterior region with horizontal ridge atrophy presents a clinical situation in which the placement of endosseous implants might be complex or sometimes impossible without a ridge augmentation procedure. This case report presents management of horizontally deficient maxillary anterior ridge with ridge split procedure using piezotome and simultaneous implant placement. In contrast to other ridge augmentation techniques, ridge splitting allows for immediate implant placement following surgery reducing the overall treatment time and eradicates the possible morbidity from a second surgical site.   Keywords: Ridge split, Ridge Augmentation, Esthetic rehabilitation, Prosthetic driven implantology

Abstract

Aim: The lack of knowledge and stress towards COVID-19 can lead to unfavorable dentist’s attitude towards the practice making them reluctant and fearful in dental operatory. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and perceived stress among dental practitioners during current COVID-19 outbreak. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 459 dental practitioners involving both general practitioners and specialists from different types of practice completed a questionnaire for assessment of knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19 and stress perceived by them. The association of perceived stress for gender, age, designation and type of practice was analyzed using Chi-square tests with Statistical significance set at 5% level. Results: Total of 459 individuals participated in study with 51.0% males and 49.0% females, of them 54.7% were specialists and 45.31% general dental practitioners, working at different types of practices. More than 90% were aware of mode of transmission and were following current guidelines. Similar results were observed for attitude towards COVID-19. Majority of participants had total PSS scores in the study sample ranged from 0-38, with total mean scores of 17.08 (±7.8), Men demonstrated significantly lower values PSS scores when compared to females (p Conclusions: Covid-19 pandemic has led to increased level of stress among dental practitioner’s despite of possessing high level of knowledge and positive attitude. Keywords: COVID-19. Perceived stress. Knowledge. Dental Practitioners.

Abstract

The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emanated from Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and has become a major public health challenge for countries around the world including India. This new virus seems to be very contagious and has quickly spread globally. Due to the characteristics of dental practice the risk of cross infection is high. The emphasis of dental practice during the pandemic and the second wave of infections has changed from cessation/reduction of elective cases requiring dental treatment and according to priority to emergency cases.Although patients with symptomatic COVID-19 have been the main source of transmission, recent observations suggest that asymptomatic patients and patients in their incubation period are also carriers of SARS-CoV-2. Most patients experienced fever and dry cough, while some also had shortness of breath, fatigue, and other atypical symptoms, such as muscle pain, confusion, headache, sore throat, diarrhoea, and vomiting. The dental chair and all equipment to be used must be wiped with isopropyl alcohol prior to seating of the patient. Preoperative antimicrobial mouth rinse could reduce the number of microbes in the oral cavity Therefore, extraoral dental radiographies, such as panoramic radiography and cone beam CT, are appropriate alternatives during the outbreak of COVID-19. Adherence to protocol and being vigilant will help other dental colleges /centres/clinics across India and the world to carry out routine emergency treatment in such trying times where utmost importance must be given to personal protection at all costs at the same time deliver quality oral health care. Abstract

Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital malformation in oro-facial region. In adult cases where defect is large and paucity of tissue is there, prosthetic management of the defect with palatal obutrator and velopharyngeal appliance is the treatment of choice. It requires scrupulous clinical skills and detailed knowledge of anatomy to prevent airway obstruction and discomfort during function. Acoustic pharyngometry (AP) is an advanced tool to evaluate the airway in 3D during function without radiation exposure. In this case report palatal obturator with speech aid prosthesis was fabricated to rehabilitate an adult cleft palate patient. AP test was done to ensure adequate airway space with prosthesis. Keywords: Cleft palate, Obturator, Speech aid prosthesis, Velophayrngeal insufficiency, Acoustic pharyngometry.

Abstract

Introduction: Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a synthetic, tooth coloured polymeric material that has been used as a biomaterial in the field of medical sciences especially in orthopaedics for last few years. As PEEK is relatively a new material in dentistry compared to composite, ceramics or zirconia, it is important to explore and summarize its properties. Aim: The aim of this review is to study the characteristics, properties and clinical significance of recently introduced dental biomaterial in dentistry that is Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK). Review Results: The PEEK is a recently introduced biomaterial in prosthodontics and due to its excellent properties like stable chemical properties and biocompatibility properties it can be used in fixed and removable prosthodontics and as well as dental implants among others. PEEK is more aesthetic, stable, biocompatible, lighter and has reduced degree of discoloration compared to the various metals used in dentistry hence may be viable option to replace metal used in dentistry. Clinical Significance: Numerous studies have proven that PEEK is an excellent viable biomaterial which can be successfully used in the field of prosthodontics. Its clinical use varies from an alternative to PMMA, CAD-CAM restorations, copings etc in fixed dental prostheses and also can be used in removable prosthodontics as an alternative to metal braces and hooks among others. It is being explored as viable option for use in various fields of prosthodontics. Conclusion: PEEK is an attractive modern biomaterial to use in prosthodontics. Due to its favourable chemical, mechanical and physical properties it is used in producing fixed and removable prostheses and also in implant prosthodontics. Keywords: PEEK (poly-ether-ether-ketone), PAEK (poly-aryl-ether-ketone), BioHPP, PEEK Abutments, Carbon-fiber reinforced PEEK.
