Abstract

Maxillofacial stents find their application in traumatic and post reconstructive surgical cases. A stent is a supplementary device used in conjunction with a surgical procedure to keep a skin graft in place. Various materials can be used in their fabrication such as acrylic resins, soft liners and modelling plastics. They can either be intraoral or extraoral, in the maxillofacial region they aid in stabilizing the deformity, prevents scar contracture, stops haemorrhage, and reduce the severity of maxillofacial defect by aiding in fabrication of a better fitting prosthesis. This paper displays the role and application auricular stent in maintaining auriculocephalic angle post-surgery.   Keywords: Stent, Auricular stent, Auriculocephalic angle

Abstract

In patients where surgical reconstruction of amputated finger is not possible, a finger prosthesis provides psychological, functional and esthetic rehabilitation. The success of the prosthesis depends on the meticulous planning, precise impression procedures, designing of prosthesis and selection of appropriate materials. This clinical report presents a case of rehabilitation of a patient with three amputated fingers due to trauma by the chaff machine. The amputation was at different digit levels. The patient was successfully rehabilitated with a custom made silicone finger prosthesis fabricated from room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone utilizing anatomical and mechanical modes of retention.   Keywords: Silicone Finger prosthesis, Anatomical undercuts, Mechanical mode of retention

Abstract

Root resorption of the tooth is defined as a pathologic or physiologic process resulting in loss of hard tissue such as root dentin, cementum and bone. Root resorption is of two types external and internal root resorption. Management of internal root resorption has always been a challenge to the endodontists. It may occur in cases with chronic pulpal inflammation, following caries or due to traumatic injuries. Prevalence of internal root resorption is more in anterior teeth, because of their susceptibility to trauma. For successful treatment outcome early diagnosis, removal of the cause, proper treatment of the resorbed root is mandatory. This paper summarizes the management of internal root resorption through two cases of non-perforating and perforating internal resorption, which were successfully managed and showed good healing after a follow up of 6 months to 1 year. Keywords: Root resorption, Nonperforating internal root resorption, Perforating internal root resorption.

Abstract

Background: For achieving predictable long-term success of nonsurgical endodontic treatment, complete debridement and effective disinfection of the root canal space are considered to be essential. The use of an intracanal medication remains an important adjunct in the total elimination of bacteria remaining even after chemo-mechanical instrumentation during endodontic treatment. Calcium hydroxide is most commonly used as intracanal medicament. Herbal alternatives like turmeric, neem, aloe vera etc. have the potential to be used as intracanal medicaments. The present study was undertaken for evaluating the antimicrobial efficacy of curcumin and aloe vera as an intracanal medicament for endodontic disinfection. Materials and Methods: In this prospective randomised controlled study, 45 patients of age group of 18-55 years requiring endodontic therapy for single rooted, single canaled teeth with periapical lesions were selected. Patients were divided into 3 groups having 15 patients each, Group I (Curcumin), Group II (Aloe vera) and Group III (Calcium hydroxide). Under aseptic conditions preoperative and post-operative samples were collected & sent to the microbiology laboratory. Antimicrobial property was assessed using the microbial colony count. Results: Distribution of median postoperative microbial colony counts among the cases studied did not differ significantly between Groups I and III (P-value>0.05) whereas it was significantly higher in Group II compared to Groups I and III (P-value Conclusion: It can be concluded that antimicrobial efficacy of curcumin showed highest antibacterial efficacy followed by calcium hydroxide and aloe vera as an intracanal medicament. Keywords: Aloe vera, Antimicrobial efficacy, Calcium hydroxide, Curcumin, Intracanal medicament, Microbial colony count.

Abstract

Primary goal in successful rehabilitation of a patient with ocular defect is to fabricate a well-fitted ocular prosthesis that mimics the original shape and position of the residual anatomical structures and restores volume of the defective socket. Adequate palpebral opening, iris-scleral visibility, color and size of iris, centering of pupil, shade of sclera, proper fixation of gaze and characterization of prosthesis are the key aspects that deserve meticulous attention. Fixation of gaze and selection of iris size can be achieved by various techniques. Four techniques involving usage of millimeter markings and numerical values with armamentarium such as spectacles with graphic grid, cassette holder with grid, modified graphic grid ruler, RS-3 Ophthalmic pupil distance meter coupled with digital imaging technique for iris selection are highlighted through these case series. Keywords: Gaze, Digital iris, Pupil Distance Meter, Graphic Grid.

Abstract

Introduction: Infection control is an important concept in the present day practice of dentistry. Elastomeric dental impressions too should be disinfected as per laid down protocols. Recently, vinylsiloxaether type of elastomeric impression material have been introduced which is supposed to have improved hydrophilic properties among others. This invitro study was taken up to compare wettability of vinylsiloxaether impression material in comparison to two other popular traditional elastomeric impression materials i.e polyether and addition silicone. Materials and Methods: An in-vitro study was undertaken to evaluate effect of four recommended commercially available disinfectant solutions on the wettability of three types of elastomeric impression materials at 10 and 30 minutes time intervals. The impression materials evaluated were vinylsiloxaether, addition silicone and polyether. The disinfectants used were 2% glutaraldehyde, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, 0.05% iodophor and 0.25% benzalkonium chloride. 100 samples of each impression material was made and subjected to 10 different immersion protocols including distill water as control. The surface wettability (contact angle) of all samples was measured using the contact angle analyzer (Digidrop, Contact angle meter, GBX products, France). The data obtained was statistically analyzed. ‘Two-sample t-tests’, ‘two- way- ANOVA’ and ‘tukey simultaneous test’ was applied.  Results: The mean contact angle values of addition silicone samples were highest among elastomers followed by polyether and vinylsiloxaether samples. The mean value of contact angles for 30 minutes immersion time interval was highly significant compared to the corresponding values of 10 minutes immersion time interval (P< 0> Conclusion: Among the elastomeric impression materials evaluated, wettability wise vinylsiloxaether proved to be the best impression material followed by polyether and addition silicone. Disinfection with 2% glutaraldehyde had shown lowest contact angle values followed by 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution, 0.25% benzalkonium chloride and 0.05% iodophor respectively. Keywords: Disinfection, Vinylsiloxaether, Wettability, Contact angle, Elastomers.

Abstract

Large defects of the skull leading to neurological defects and facial disfigurement can be traumatizing for the patient. Such defects can be rehabilitated using various biomaterials, polymethyl methacrylate being the most commonly used.   Keywords: Syndrome of Trephined (SoT), Craniectomy, Cranioplasty
