“ Handle with care” Biomedical Waste Management Awareness among Undergraduate Medi cal Students in North Karnataka : A cross sectional study

International Journal of Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Pharma Research Abstract:By definition, biomedical waste (BMW) is any waste produced during the diagnosis, treatment, or vaccination of humans or animals, as well as during related research projects, biological production, or testing. On March 28, 2016, the Ministry of Environment and Forest replaced the 1998 regulations with new biological waste management guidelines under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. Background:India produces roughly 1.5 to 2 kg of BMW per bed every day. BMW contain sharps, laboratory waste, anatomical waste and other materials that can be lethal if improperly separated. Methods:This is a cross-sectional study done among medical students (MBBS). Their Knowledge regarding Biomedical waste management was ascertained in this study. Results:When asked if the participants knew about BMW generation and legislation, 229 (65.6%) said yes, whereas 120 (34.4%) said no. When asked if the participants knew the color-coding segregation of BMWs, 254 (72.8%) said yes, while 52 (14.9%). There was a positive association between urban or rural residence and BMW questions. Conclusion: Biomedical waste management is a key topic that all medical students, doctors, nurses, allied health care professionals should be well versed in. Also, patients, families and people who accompany patients to healthcare facilities should be aware of the hazards posed by biomedical waste materials. Proper disposal and hazard management is the key to alleviate this problem.
