Abstract

Periodontitis-affected root surfaces are hypermineralized and contaminated with cytotoxic and other biologically active substances. Chemical root conditioner are playing important role in decontaminating root surface as well as enlarge dentinal tubules into which healing connective tissue can enter. The various root conditioning agents used are citric acid, tetracycline, doxycycline, phosphoric acid, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid etc. The present study was aimed to compare the efficacy of citric acid as root conditioner with scaling and root planing scaling and root planing alone by observing the change in root surface under SEM. For the present study 40 samples were obtained from 20 single rooted anterior teeth indicated for extraction having hopeless prognosis. The obtained samples are scaled and root planed properly then tooth root are divided in two parts and. One part of each root sample were treated with saline and other with citric acid. Scanning photomicrographs of the root surfaces were taken at 3000X. Photomicrography analysis of SEM samples revealed that removal of smear layer and opening of dentinal tubules was more in samples treated by citric acid with SRP than the SRP alone. Abstract

Introduction: The first line of treatment for chronic periodontitis has always been phase 1 therapy with scaling and root planing with oral hygiene reinforcement. Mechanical debridement may fail to eliminate pathogenic flora because of their location in areas inaccessible to periodontal instruments. Antimicrobial agents may work as adjuncts to mechanical therapy. Materials and Methods: This study was designed as a case control study carried out on 30 patients suffering from chronic periodontitis. Two contralateral sites with moderate deep pockets in the each patient were chosen and the teeth were divided into two groups. Group A sites got scaling and root planing alone while group B sites got an adjunctive antimicrobial experimental bioadhesive drug containing tetracycline, serratiopeptidase and bactase enzyme. Recall visits were scheduled at 30 and 90 days. General linear model showed decrease in gingival and periodontal indices which was statistically significantly greater in the experimental drug group. Conclusion: Local drug delivery with the experimental bioadhesive drug is an effective nonsurgical method for use as an adjunct to mechanical debridement. Abstract

Oral hygiene status is very important, it shows person’s attitude towards the oral hygiene and also oral cavity is first entry for food and its digestion. The presence of food debris and calculus on tooth surface reflects the oral hygiene status of the person. Objectives of the Study: To observe the oral hygiene status of young adult of age group of 20-25 years in the rural and urban area of Patna. Materials and Methods: Cross sectional descriptive study of rural and urban population of 20-25 years of age. Results: The inter group variation in OHI-S is very small and not significant in the urban populations. The inference of oral hygiene status of rural population is showing that comes under poor oral hygiene status while the OHI-S of urban area comes under fair oral hygiene status but it is on higher side of it. Keywords: Oral hygiene, OHI, Urban, Rural.
