Abstract

The natural products have played a dominant role in the treatment of human ailments. The discovery of penicillin has changed the scenario of modern medicine. With the ancient use of quinine for malaria, willow bark for pain and several other natural products used as medicines in ancient system of medicine such as Ayurveda and traditional China, the discovery of the medicines for the allopathic use from natural source has gained substantial attention. The ancient system of Ayurveda describes the used of many plants extracts being used for the treatment of cancer. Prevailing epidemiological factors have also described the use of the msediterranean diet and inclusion of fruits and vegetables to score low as risk factor for the cancers. Further the several discoveries have led to the transformation of the active constituents of the natural products from the dietary sources for the chemoprevention. Substantial trials in the development of the drugs from the marine and microbial origin have been fruitful and positive to develop safe and efficacious drugs. However, the success being very low due to unavailability of natural products in large gram amounts required for the clinical trials. The total synthesis of m any natural products from marine origin has also emerged to solve this issue and led to successful development of 4 marine drugs as anti-cancer agents. This overview reviews the anticancer drugs from the natural origin as the chemo preventive and chemotherapeutic agents. Wherever possible the details of the clinical trials have been discussed along with uses and mechanism of action. Abstract

Water born enteric viruses pose thread to both human and animal life causing a wide range of illness. Ground water is the commonest transmission route for these viruses. About 50% of ground water related outbreaks are attributed to viruses. Viral infections have a long history of association with drinking water supplies. Evidence of water-borne transmission is predominantly based on epidemiological data. Water-borne disease transmission has only in exceptional cases been confirmed by direct detection of viruses in drinking water supplies. Water, a frequent vehicle, may permit their survival, but many environmental factors will have an adverse effect on the viral pollution. Risk evaluation requires identification of these factor and assessment of inactivation rate of infection viruses. Keywords: Viruses, Water, Water-borne outbreaks, Enteric

Abstract

Natural products with immunomodulatory effects are widely used in the treatment of many diseases, including autoimmune diseases, as well as cancer and inflammatory diseases. They have attracted great interest as therapeutic agents in recent decades because they offer inexpensive and less toxic products than synthetic chemotherapy agents. Immunomodulators are substances that have the ability to improve or suppress the host's defense response, which can be used for prevention and in combination with other treatments. The anticancer effects of these immunomodulators result from their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and apoptosis-inducing, anti-angiogenic and anti-metastatic effects. In addition to preventing tumor growth and proliferation, these natural immunomodulators, such as curcumin and Vinca, can also be used as a preventive treatment against cancer. In contrast, immunostimulants can induce and activate humoral and cell-mediated immune responses against the tumor, which facilitates the recognition and destruction of a pre-existing tumor.   Keywords: Ehtnopharmacology, Vinca, Turmeric, Review, Periwinkle, Curcumin

Abstract

A cepa or onion is the most edible vegetable throughout the world. It also has diverse pharmacological properties. It is a fibrous perennial plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Onions contain vitamins such as folic acid and vitamin B6. It also contains minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. It shows diverse pharmacological properties such as anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticoagulant, antihypertensive and antidepressant and neuroprotective effects. It is believed to be a carminative and shows beneficial effects on circulatory and respiratory systems as well as the immune system. Allium cepa finds its uses in cancer because of many stress conditions such as oxidative stress can be subsided by the Allium cepa extract and formulations. In this review, an attempt was made to formulate the medicated syrup of A. cepa. Four such formulations were made (F1, F2, F3, F4). The F4 formulation was optimized and was stable. The Formulation F4 can be adopted for preparation of A. cepa syrup on Industrial scale.   Keywords: Formulation, Evaluation, Herbal Syrup, Onion, Allium Cepa
