Metabolic Dysregulation in Dengue Fever: A Study of Concurrent Hypolipidemia, Glucose Instability, and Hypoproteinemia

Introduction: This study aimed to characterize the concurrent patterns of hypolipidemia, glucose instability, and hypoproteinemia in dengue patients and evaluate their association with disease severity. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Sudan with 187 participants (95 males, 92 females) stratified into age-groups. Fasting blood samples were collected to measure metabolic markers including glucose, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TAG), total cholesterol, total protein, albumin, and globulin. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests for gender comparisons, and Kruskal–Wallis H-tests for age-group comparisons. Results: Significant age-related variations were observed in glucose (p = 0.012), HDL (p = 0.035), total protein (p = 0.001), and globulin (p = 0.012). The 40–49 age-group demonstrated the highest glucose levels (median 141.8 mg/dL), while the <20 group showed the most favorable metabolic profile. No significant gender-based differences were found in any metabolic marker. Conclusion: Age is a critical determinant of metabolic status in dengue patients, with middle-aged individuals (40–49 years) at higher risk for metabolic dysregulation.
