Abstract

D- dimer assays are most widely used in clinical practice to exclude a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis. D- dimer assays vary in instrumentation, calibration standard, method of capture and antibody used. These differences impose significant influence on the characteristics of the assays during operation. In this review, we have outlined the general properties and limitations of different D-dimer assays and provided clinical perspective on the role of D-dimer test in the diagnosis and prognosis of venous thromboembolism. Keywords: Acute respiratory distress syndrome, Ddimer, Deep vein thrombosis, Prognosis, Pulmonary embolism, Venous thromboembolism

Abstract

Background: Renal diseases of different origin and nature may produce essentially similar disturbances of renal functions and may have clinical similarities and hence there was a need to classify renal diseases more scientifically. The basic approach was to correlate clinical signs and symptoms with histological changes in the tissue, using both simple and special staining techniques so as to reach to a definitive diagnosis. Material and Methods: The present study was conducted on renal biopsy referred to pathology department. Criteria for successful biopsy were as follows-Adequate biopsy sample size, correct processing of specimen, informed interpretation and issue of an accurate report. Results: A total of 29 renal biopsies were examined. In minimal change disease, only in 4 patients the glomerulus was sclerosed. Membranous glomerulonephritis comprised of the maximum number of cases (9/30). Total of 3 cases of renal biopsies revealed amyloidosis. Focal amyloid deposits with deposits either near the hilum or perivascular areas were found in 33.3% of cases, while extensive amyloid deposits were found in 33.3% of the cases. Conclusion: It is necessary to determine both the type of renal disease and the cause of the primary disorder in order to make the diagnosis and various staining techniques play a very helpful role. The likelihood that the biopsy specimen accurately reflects the type and severity of the underlying disease is directly related to both the diffuseness of the disease process and the amount of tissue examined.   Keywords: Inflammatory, Glomeruli, Microscopy, Renal disease, Stain

Abstract

Zinc is a micromineral present in the body tissues and fluids. Zinc is absorbed from the duodenum and stored in the form of metallothionine in the liver and excreted through sweat. Zinc plays a vital role in protein biosynthesis, gene expression; it also acts as an antioxidant and is used in the growth of the fungus. Due to the deficiency of zinc, a patient will be suffering from poor wound healing, lesions of skin, impaired spermatogenesis, hyperkeratosis, dermatitis and alopecia. An unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic caused by a novel corona virus called SARS-CoV-2, produces severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Zinc is used to treat COVID 19 because it improves the immunity. As the COVID patients are susceptible to zinc deficiency, they are prescribed with zinc supplements. Intake of zinc more than1000mg/day causes Zinc toxicity. Fungus utilises zinc for its growth. Mucormycosis caused by fungus Rhizopus species seen in most of the post COVID patients. Since, Zinc has assumed importance in this COVID 19 pandemic, this review article unfathoms the explicit roles of Zinc in humans.   Keywords: COVID 19, Mucormycosis, Zinc, Zinc toxicity.

Abstract

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells which usually arises from one cell (clonal) and has the characteristic of self renewal i.e ability to proliferate and differentiate into various styles of cells (potent). Depending upon the potencies there are different sources of stem cells. Pluripotent cells has the flexibility to differentiate into tissues from the three germ layers. There are various sources of stem cells with varying potencies. Pluripotent cells have the ability to differentiate into tissue from all 3 germ layers (endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm). Multipotent stem cells may differentiate into tissue derived from a single germ layer like mesenchymal stem cells which form adipose tissue, bone, and cartilage thanks to the limited generation of most somatic cells, stem cells’ capacity to replenish damaged somatic cells and maintain a self-renewing reservoir of progenitors is crucial for homeostasis in many tissues of the many organisms. Thus, there’s an immense interest in understanding the mechanisms for self-renewal and differentiation in stem cells, given their potential applications in regenerative medicine and studies of human development or aging during this article we’ll describe about stem cells and various varieties of stem cells. Keywords: Stem cells, Differentiation, Adult stem cells, Embryonic stem cells, Induced pluripotent stem cells.
