The rise of predatory journals poses significant threats to academic integrity, exploiting the open-access model and the publish-or-perish culture in academia. These unethical entities prioritize financial gain over rigorous peer review, leading to the dissemination of unverified and potentially flawed research. This paper explores the global prevalence of journal scams, characterizing their deceptive practices such as aggressive solicitation, lack of peer review, high publication fees, and misleading metrics. The impact on the academic community is profound, resulting in compromised research integrity, financial exploitation, reputational damage, and stifled innovation. To combat these scams, a multifaceted approach involving educational initiatives, institutional support, and cross-disciplinary collaboration is essential. By promoting awareness and providing practical strategies, this paper aims to safeguard the integrity of scholarly publishing and uphold the principles of ethical research practices. This article also examines the prevalence of predatory journals globally, their defining characteristics, and ways scholars can avoid them. Predatory journals often disguise themselves as legitimate open-access outlets, luring researchers with promises of rapid publication and high impact factors. However, these journals compromise research integrity and exploit authors financially. By providing inclusive data analysis and insights from case studies, this article aims to equip researchers with the knowledge needed to discern and avoid these unethical entities.
