Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in English language education, offering unprecedented opportunities for personalized instruction, immediate feedback, and interactive learning experiences. However, the integration of AI into language learning also presents significant pedagogical, ethical, and institutional challenges that require systematic examination. This study investigates the impact of AI on English language learning by synthesizing evidence from existing research on its educational opportunities and challenges. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 framework. Relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 were identified from major academic databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. After a comprehensive screening and eligibility assessment process, 44 studies were included in the final review. Data were analysed through thematic synthesis, examining patterns in AI applications, language skill development, pedagogical approaches, and reported challenges. The findings reveal that AI applications, particularly generative AI chatbots, automated writing-evaluation tools, speech-recognition systems, and adaptive learning platforms, support personalized instruction, immediate feedback, writing development, speaking practice, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation improvement, learner motivation, and autonomous learning. However, the review also identifies significant concerns including inaccurate or inappropriate feedback, learner dependency, academic dishonesty, privacy risks, algorithmic bias, cultural and pragmatic limitations, inadequate teacher training, and unequal access to digital resources. The study concludes that AI is most effective when integrated into teacher-guided, blended, and human-centred learning environments where technology complements rather than replaces teachers, authentic communication, and learners' independent thinking. This research contributes to the growing literature on AI-assisted language education by providing a balanced synthesis of opportunities and challenges, highlighting the importance of pedagogical design, teacher mediation, ethical safeguards, and equitable access in AI integration. The findings inform policy development, teacher training, and instructional practice in English language education.
