“Impact of Family Adoption Programme on medical students in India – A cross sectional study

Background: In order to achieve national health goals, the NMCs FAP strategy aims to expand access to high quality medical education, ensure the availability of trained professionals nationwide, promote equitable and universal healthcare, and cultivate a community health perspective. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done among medical students. Sample Size were calculated assuming that Proportion students think FAP is good academic activity were 81.1%. The study required a sample size of 370 for estimating the expected prevalence with 4% absolute precision and 95% confidence level. Results: the impact of FAP on MBBS students. Out of the 406 participants, 343 (84.5%) had a perceived positive impact of FAP on their ability to provide patient cantered care, whereas 63 (15.5%) had a negative impact. The overall satisfaction with experience in FAP, 301 (74.1%) were satisfied. the association between impact of FAP and year of study and the results showed statistical significance. The question, how do you perceive the impact of FAP on your ability to provide patient-centred care? Chi-square was 8.861 and p value was 0.012.* Other questions also showed statistical significance. Conclusions: Family adoption programme is an innovative program by the government to integrate the rural population into mainstream medical care. The role played by the MBBS students and faculty members is commendable. Teething problems should be ironed out at the earliest to ensure that the local population is benefitted with this program.
