Despite the success rate of dental implant-supported prostheses and bone grafting, 1 removable complete dentures are still commonly provided, including for patients with limited financial resources, severe bone resorption, as an interim treatment before dental implant loading, for patients with severe systemic diseases unable to undergo surgical procedures,2 and for those who are satisfied with complete dentures and decline surgical treatment. Although the success of removable dental prostheses depends on different factors, the influence of adequate retention, stability and support has been emphasized.3 In situations where retention and stability have not been achieved satisfactorily, such as for patients with severely resorbed ridges,4,5xerostomia, 6 lack of muscular control,7,8or oral deformations caused by tumors or trauma,4 the use of denture adhesives may berecommended to improve masticatory function. 9Denture adhesive refers to a commercially available, nontoxic, soluble material that is applied to the tissue surface of the denture to enhance denture retention, stability, and performance.10 In the present article denture adhesive has been reviewed in detail.
